A recent study by Planet Retail entitled 'Private Label Trends Worldwide 2007' reported that leading US retailers are aggressively pursing private label strategies to compete with brand manufacturers and global retailers such as Tesco. This study goes on to state that private label accounts for 35% of sales volume in Europe, and Tesco and Sainsbury, both Eqos customers attribute over 50% of their sales to private label. But there are challenges associated with adopting a private label strategy: product safety, ethical sourcing, the ability for suppliers to conform to consumer and regulatory standards.
